Our History.

For three generations, the Wood family has been devoted to the creation of fine jewellery, beginning with Verdun Wood, John’s father, a lifelong jeweller and watchmaker in his native home of New Zealand.

John, and later Chris, continued his legacy, working for many years as manufacturing jewellers in Collins Street, Melbourne before establishing Montal Jewellers in the leafy, historic village of Mont Albert.

Over the ensuing years, Montal Jewellers has become a Mont Albert institution, earning a reputation as one of the leading independent fine jewellers in Melbourne’s east.

With John’s retirement in 2021, Chris Wood carries on the family’s tradition of excellence in fine jewelcraft. Professional, personable and expertly skilled in jewellery design and fabrication, Chris is passionate about crafting exquisite fine jewellery that is both timeless and enduring.

Across twenty five years in the Melbourne fine jewellery industry, Chris has been privileged to bring some stunning designs to life on behalf of his clients. His unwavering commitment to his patrons has earned him a loyal following and reputation for exceptional service.

​An eastern suburbs local born and raised in Ringwood North, Chris is a devoted dad to two beautiful kids and husband to wife Laura. In spare moments, Chris loves a round of golf or to indulge in his lifelong passion for supporting the Hawthorn Football Club.
